How It Works
The calculator multiplies the exterior wall area by an installed cost per square foot for the vinyl grade you pick. Enter the wall area directly (feet or meters; metric entries convert to square feet), or give the house footprint, the number of stories and a wall height per story, and the tool uses perimeter × height × stories. The 9 ft default wall height is an assumption you should adjust; gables are not included.
The per-square-foot rates come from three public cost guides transcribed on 2026-09-14: Fixr’s grade table (builder’s, standard, premium, insulated), HomeGuide’s style table (clapboard and insulated) and HomeAdvisor’s insulated figure. For each grade the low end is the lowest low the guides publish, the high end is the highest high, and the typical figure is the average of the guides’ midpoints. All three guides agree that vinyl overall runs about $3–$12 per square foot installed. The rates include materials and labor; labor is 30–50% of the total per Fixr and HomeAdvisor, and the tool splits the typical figure that way.
Ticking “remove and dispose of the old siding” adds $0.70–$2.00 per square foot from HomeGuide (Fixr prices it at $1,000–$2,500 per job). Trim, soffit and fascia are not priced by these guides, so they are not included.
Siding is sold by the square (100 sq ft). The tool adds your waste allowance to the wall area to get the squares to order; the Vinyl Siding Institute’s installation manual says to add 10 percent to all material estimates and not to deduct windows and doors.
Worked Example
A 2,000 sq ft house sides about 1,700 sq ft of wall (HomeGuide’s coverage table). Standard residential grade runs $4–$7 per square foot, typical $5.50, so the installed cost is about $6,800 low, ~$9,350 typical and $11,900 high. That matches the low end of HomeGuide’s own row for a 2,000 sq ft home ($6,800–$20,400 across all grades). Of the typical figure, labor is ~$2,805–$4,675. With 10% waste you would order about 18.7 squares.
FAQ
Why is the range so wide?
Vinyl thickness alone doubles the price (builder’s grade $2–$6 versus insulated $6–$12), and labor is 30–50% of the total, so local rates and the season matter. Houses with many corners, windows and gables take longer to cut and fit. Get three written quotes and compare them to the typical figure.
Does waste change the cost?
No. The guides’ rates are per square foot of wall and already cover normal cutting waste. The waste allowance only changes the squares to order, which is what you need when pricing material yourself.
How do I measure my wall area?
Measure the height and width of each wall and add them up. Do not subtract windows and doors unless they are very large (a garage door, for instance); the Vinyl Siding Institute manual says that allowance covers waste. Gables are half the base times the height.
Are these prices for my area?
They are US national ranges. None of the three guides publishes a state or city table, so there is no regional factor. Expect high-cost metro areas to land nearer the high end.
Where do the cost figures come from?
Every rate in the table links to the page it came from, with the access date and the guide’s own update date. When a guide updates its numbers the table lags until we re-check it.
